Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is an Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME)?

It is one of the highly rewarding technical courses with immense job opportunities for 10+2 with PCM students leading to pursuing a licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Government of India for maintaining aircraft as Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. All aircraft operating in the country are required to be diagnosed and maintained to the highest standards as laid down by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Aircraft Maintenance Engineers are specifically trained to inspect an aircraft, diagnose, report, and finally solve the problems if found any. No aircraft can take off without the approval of a licenced AME official.

  • All students who have passed their Class XII examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as core subjects from a recognized board or university or its equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 45% marks are eligible to apply for AME two year CAR 147 (Basic) AME training program. All students who have appeared for the Class XII examination and whose results are not available will be provisionally considered eligible and subject to their marks in the Class XI examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Candidates who have done a diploma in Mechanical, Electrical & Electronics stream are also eligible to apply. In order to be eligible, the student must also be medically fit and should not suffer from colour blindness and/or night blindness. Foreign students need to obtain security clearance through DGCA for admission to the course.

  • Currently, India stands as the ninth largest aviation market and one of the fastest-growing domestic air markets in the world. The industry is said to be contributing a total of $72 billion to the nation’s GDP. The civil aviation sector is growing at a fast pace and bringing in more foreign investments and creating new job opportunities for the young aspirants in India. The UDAN scheme plays an important role in promoting the scope of AME. It can make airfares affordable for common people to choose air travel. The growth rate, of air passengers, is around 25% which leads to the need for new aircraft and engineers in aviation. Boeing and Airbus set up their MRO organizations in different states of India. It creates thousands of jobs for young engineers. India took its first steps in manufacturing civil aircraft which increased the opportunities for aircraft engineers.

  • An AME aspirant needs to complete the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course from an institute approved by DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation). Students are required to pass all the module examinations conducted by DGCA which is the designated authority. It issues licences only to those candidates who pass the exams as a part of eligibility and acquire the maintenance experience as per DGCA CAR 66.

  • AME is a licencing course offered by DGCA approved institutes while Aeronautical Engineering is a regular 4-year degree course approved by AICTE. Both can be chosen after passing XII with PCM. AME equips one with practical knowledge to keep the aircraft fit to fly whereas an aeronautical engineer studies design, structure, system and aerodynamics to increase flight safety and reduce overall cost. In India, all the engineers in Civil Aviation are required to possess an AME licence as regulated by DGCA CAR 66. In other words, no aircraft can fly without the permission of a licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, compelling all the organisations to recruit AME licence holders in order to maintain the airworthiness of the aircraft. In short, Engineers who did MTech and PhD in Aeronautical Engineering/other engineering are required to obtain an AME licence as per DGCA CAR 66 in order to officially release an aircraft.
